                    Abstract Note
Public squares have historically been a place for social debate and the exchange of ideas—both vital aspects of a healthy democracy. In fact, the public sphere, and thus democracy, cannot exist without public spaces to engage in political speech, assembly, and to petition the government without it being abridged. There is a speaker-stand commemorating the 1st Amendment in Bo Diddley Plaza, demonstrating that this public space has been officially designated for this very purpose.
