Abstract Note
Occupy Brisbane is a leaderless, peaceful and global movement with people of many colors, genders and political persuasions. The one thing we all have in common is that We Are The 99% that will no longer tolerate the greed and corruption of the 1%.
By standing together we willl unite the people around the World for a true democracy. A democracy where the needs of the majority of people is put before the profits and privileges of the few.
A world united under the banner of solidarity, workers and human rights, peace and environmental justice.
#Occupy Brisbane has stated the vision of "Peacefully sending a message to the financial sectors and monetary governmental systems worldwide that the people of Australia too want change and will stand united together and act for the common good of all".
As this is a Worldwide Movement, the original #Occupy Wall Street declaration will be supported (please see https://occupywallst.org/) to stand united on a broader perspective that encompasses all of humanity, for global change.
We simply propose a directly democratic and non-hierarchical social situation where neither capital nor the state determine the way we live or how society functions - that is what would be ideal. In other words, a real democracy in which we consciously and collectively determine social life.
We aim at the construction of directly democratic, truly participatory institutions and seek to present these as real alternatives to the corporate-dominated oligarchy. In practice, this means placing greater emphasis on bodies like the General Assembly in decision-making and insisting on its decision-making legitimacy.
It means being conscious of the emergence of power structures in our everyday practice. It also means getting involved with and radicalising unions to take the fight to corporations in the work place. Finally, we should also be developing a self-critical culture open to contradictions, differences of opinions and debates. The development of a truly democratic culture necessitates that we're not afraid of these things, but indeed, welcome them.
We recognise and acknowledge the traditional owners of the land - the Turrbal nation to the North of the river and the Jagera to the South - and the imperial colonisation and subsequent occupation of this country. Sovereignty never ceded.
Following the principles of Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jnr, Tolstoy & Jesus - Not Bush / Obama, Napoleon & Caesar.
